On 16th November 2020, the virtual workshop on “GIs and public goods: experiences and recommendations” was organized by AREPO in collaboration with the EU-funded project Strength2Food.

During the workshop, AREPO members and other Geographical Indications (GI) stakeholders and policy makers had the chance to present and discuss about the key results and recommendations delivered by the 5-year Strength2Food project.

A plenary session with presentations on Strength2Food results opened the workshop. Strength2Food coordinator, Prof. Matthew Gorton, from Newcastle University, stressed the role and the impact of the project in the context of the sustainability of GIs. This was followed by Prof. Konstadinos Mattas, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who discussed policy recommendations, and Prof. Filippo Arfini, University of Parma, on the relationship between GIs and Public Goods, and introducing Strength2Food strategic guide to improving the sustainability and the economic value of GIs.

In the second part of the workshop, the attendees had the opportunity to take an active part in the event and exchange their knowledge and experience during the discussion groups, which were held in several languages to facilitate the communication – namely Italian, Spanish, English, Greek and French.

Feedbacks from the AREPO scientific committee and a general discussion with the AREPO stakeholders closed the dynamic and fruitful event.
