Dr Carmen Hubbard (Newcastle University) was an invited expert to the second European Conference on Rural Development in Cork on 5-6 September 2016, exactly 20 years after the ground-breaking European Conference on Rural Development in Cork and the signing of the Cork Declaration on Rural Development. This significant forum, organised by the European Commission and led by Commissioner Phil Hogan, gathered over 300 EU representatives to discuss current and future challenges of farming and rural areas and identify potential policy responses. As a result of this, a new declaration was drafted ‘A Better Life in Rural Areas‘.
